Ultrasonic flowmeters are used by Climate Control as heat quantity measurement instruments in commercial and industrial applications. The clamp-on mounting technique of the flow and temperature sensors enables the flowmeters to measure heat quantity non-invasively without the risk of interruption of flow, pressure drop or leakage.
The use of clamp-on flowmeters as energy measurement devices requires a pair of ultrasonic flow sensors installed on a suitable pipe section and two PT100 temperature sensors. The PT100s are mounted on the inlet and outlet pipes of the chosen system. The flowmeter then makes use of the flow data, the differential temperature and the specific heat capacity of the flowing medium in order to calculate the energy consumption.
